Being an entrepreneur is scary. We are conditioned from birth to conform to societal norms and follow a certain path. If you want to become an entrepreneur and become successful, you have to go completely against the grain. The mere thought of that can be fear provoking. Society will look down on you. Your peers will tell you you are making a mistake. Your family will tell you you are making a mistake. The easy choice is to stay safe in the position you are in, but you have to remember this fear is only temporary. When you have successfully proven yourself, people will always ask you how you did it and pushing past the fear is a huge part of that.
Fear is powerful. We are afraid of failure, afraid of change, afraid of the future, afraid of the unknown… The list goes on and on. Don’t make the common mistake and let your fear cripple you.
I face this every day, but I have to push myself out of my personal comfort zone on purpose. Make phone calls to intimidating potential clients. Go to events with hundreds of people I don’t know. Send business inquiries to people who could possibly be uninterested. Deal with the inevitable negative people any time I launch a new product. These are all things that make me uncomfortable, but they are all things that I have to do on a daily basis.
If you keep pushing towards your goals, thinking outside of the box, and going against the grain, you won’t be “normal.” It’s okay to not be “normal.” You don’t want to be “normal.” The normal person works a 9 – 5 job and dreams about doing other things the entire time. The normal person is unhappy for 5 days out of the week.
Don’t let your fear cripple you and don’t settle for “normal.”
