With the holiday season among us, we have to remember how to take a break from our busy lives and just relax. As an entrepreneur, we praise ourselves on our long business hours constantly hustling towards our goals of financial freedom. It becomes so easy to forget how to take a break and why it is absolutely pertinent to our mental and physical health.
There is no denying that continued long work hours can be draining. The constant grind of entrepreneurship / small business ownership can be a brutal struggle at times. Sometimes we work so much that we forget to eat, forget about vacations, forget about a social life, and forget about time off. We get so caught up in our businesses and our goals that we neglect a part of what makes us human.
But, what happens when we get stuck? What happens when we lose motivation? What happens when we run out of ideas?
We always keep going. However, sometimes, the best thing to do is to take a little break.
Now, it doesn’t have to be a 10 day extravagant vacation, but sometimes a half or full day off can give your brain and your body the recharge it needs. Have you ever noticed that you can be stuck on a problem in your business, you take a bathroom break, and suddenly the answer is crystal clear?
This happens to me more often than I would like to admit while I am programming. Sometimes, I will be stuck on a seemingly complex issue for 3 hours only to figure it out in seconds when I come back from a 5 minute break.
When it comes to taking more than a few minute break, the same principles apply. When it comes to the holidays, I am especially bad at “relaxing.” I find myself constantly stressing about whatever project is coming up or whatever deadlines need to be met. I have to consciously force myself to shut off my business brain, let myself recharge, and get back to it the next day.
This is a LOT easier said than done, but you will thank yourself afterwards. If you give yourself the necessary time to recharge, you will find that you are less stressed, more motivated, more prepared, and sharp as a tack.
After all, we are working towards financial freedom. Go enjoy time with your family and loved ones and let your body and mind recharge. Your business will be there when you get back.
